I saw the program featuring Kate and Gerry McCann on TV tonight. Despite not recovering their daughter yet, even after all this time they have not given up hope and this is a real inspiration to other distraught parents facing a similar tragedy.

They should be very proud of all that their relentless determination has accomplished; I believe they have done a really great job. By maintaining a vigilant focus on their own daughter Madeleine they have managed to significantly raise the profile of the plight of numerous other abducted children worldwide on behalf of the many thousands still missing throughout Europe and beyond.

http://bringmadeleinehome.com

I commend their efforts in campaigning for a system like the US “Amber Alert” to benefit all missing children by facilitating rapid recovery.

The publicity they have generated over the past year will undoubtedly put pressure on European Union decision makers to go ahead and legislate in favor or instituting a similar program within the EU, especially when the one year anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance is reported in the press.

I think that it might help to increase pressure on the MEPs if we could initiate a Petition in favor of Kate and Gerry’s proposal. Through their well established Website they could then promote such a Petition and amass signatures in favor of this proposal.

I think that as the anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction provides another publicity spike this is an ideal time to launch a Petition and it would gain massive support.

Shannon 'Drugged For 20 Months'

Shannon Matthews had been given "potent hypnotic" drugs for 20 months before her disappearance, a court has heard.
Shannon, centre, with the two people accused of abducting her
A forensic toxicologist said trace amounts of temazepam and the travel sickness medication Melcozine were found in the young girl's urine after she was found by police.
Dr Craig Chatterton told Leeds Crown Court this meant the powerful sleep inducers would have been ingested by her up to 72 hours before the sample was taken.
But he said traces of the drugs found in Shannon's hair showed they had been taken over a much longer period.
He said drugs were detected in all 20cm of her hair indicating "it was ingested over an extended period dating back 20 months."
The girl's mother Karen Matthews, 33, and her co-accused Michael Donovan, 40, are on trial accused of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.
The court has heard how Shannon was found in Donovan's flat 24 days after she went missing from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire.
Donovan is said to have kept her drugged and imprisoned in his flat in Batley Carr as part of a plan he and Matthews had to claim £50,000 in reward money.
Earlier, the court heard Matthews had told shocked friends she reported her daughter missing when a plan to leave her partner went wrong.
Her neighbour Natalie Brown said Matthews made the admission in a car with a police officer present, three weeks after her daughter was found following a huge police hunt.
Mrs Brown said Matthews was in tears and shaking. She said she had been planning to leave her partner Craig Meehan to go and live with Donovan but everything went wrong.
Mrs Brown said the police officer - Detective Constable Christine Freeman - immediately stopped the car and told Matthews she would be arrested on suspicion of abduction.
The jury heard transcripts of a police interview Matthews gave on March 18, four days after Shannon found.
She was asked directly if she knew where her daughter was all along.
She told the detectives: "I swear on my life I did not.
"If I knew where she was I would have gone and grabbed her myself. I wouldn't have gone out looking for her, I would have gone straight to the flat ... I wouldn't have wasted police time."

Why we need an Amber Alert Did you know that the first 48 hours after a child is abducted is known as the golden hour? This is the most crucial time for a child to be recovered.

In the US, 397 children have been rescued as a result of the Amber Alert. Only Belgium, Denmark, France and Portugal have this type of missing child bureau. Every country in the EU should have such a system. Until the system is implemented, other children and families will suffer. The alert system would be reserved for the most serious cases, where the child is at risk of physical harm.

Other authors of the written declaration include Roberta Angelilli (UEN), Glenys Kinnock (PES), Evelyne Gebhardt (PES) and Diana Wallis (ALDE). A Written Declaration must be first signed by at least half of the MEPs in order to be reputed as adopted.
There are currently 783 MEP's registered. Currently, this declaration has only 283 signatures, for the declaration to become an official resolution at least 400 signatures of MEP's are required.

The general public have until 21 July to lobby their MEP, to support and sign the written declaration "Emergency Cooperation in Recovering Missing Children"

The public can write a letter and send via FAX or send an E-mail to their MEP asking them to sign the written declaration at the following address:
European ParliamentCorrespondence with CitizensGOL03A012L-2929 LUXEMBOURG
Public can fax their letter through to: Fax:(352) 43 00 27 072
The majority of MEP's have E-mail addresses which can be found on the European Parliament Web-site.

Without the signatures of those additional MEP's - AMBER ALERT throughout Europe WILL NOT HAPPEN - How many more children have to be abducted before the rulers of our countries use their power to at least make it more difficult for abductors to move abducted children across borders.

AMBER ALERT
This is a system that is set up in America and has been very successful in locating missing children
The AMBER Alert Program, named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, and transportation agencies to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. Broadcasters use the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to air a description of the abducted child and suspected abductor. This is the same concept used during severe weather emergencies. The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe recovery of the child.
How does the Alert system work?
Alerts are sent out via the Emergency Alert System (or Emergency Broadcast System, originally designed to disperse information after a nuclear attack) to law enforcement agencies and radio and television stations. The announcements are prefaced by a special "Abducted Child Statement" code, to differentiate them from tornado or flood warnings. Some states also use large traffic alert signs on their highways, especially when the suspect is believed to have access to a car.

Spain’s sun-kissed Canary Islands, where thousands of British holidaymakers will shortly head, have been convulsed by the disappearance of a 7-year-old boy, the second time in recent months that a child has gone missing in mysterious circumstances.
More than 2,000 volunteers combed the island of Gran Canaria this weekend amid growing public fears that a paedophile could be at work on the Spanish archipelago, which is preparing to receive hundreds of thousands of Easter sun-seekers.
Soldiers with sniffer dogs and police divers have joined the search for Yeremi Vargas, as security was tightened at local ports and airports.
More than 10,000 posters bearing the boy’s smiling face have appeared throughout the Canary Islands and thousands of residents have gathered in town squares appealing for his safe return.
Police have received hundreds of calls from people claiming to have seen the boy in places as far afield as Asturias, in the north of Spain, and even Luxembourg. An old-age pensioner reportedly put her small monthly payment up as a reward for his return.
“They have taken my son and are doing something awful to him,” said his disconsolate mother, Ithaysa, who is just 24-years old and has another one-year-old baby.

Missing People launch their new research report 'Living in Living' the first account of the devastating impact that going missing can have on left behind family members, including emotional, social, financial, legal and practical difficulties.

The breadth and depth of different problems facing families of missing people can be quite bewildering. Emotionally, families can swing between states of grief and hope which leave them living in limbo. This is often compounded by the complexity of dealing with a missing persons legal and financial affairs, and the practical difficulties that arise from continuing to search for their missing loved one.

A new initiative backed by 's parents is to be launched to help keep children safe on holiday. The six point plan - named Code Madeleine - outlines what parents should do if their child goes missing.

The code - similar to the Code Adam scheme in the US which is named after abducted six-year-old Adam Walsh - was developed by the Federation of Tour Operators, the Association of British Travel Agents and the News of the World which will launch the plan in Sunday's newspaper.

The objective of Code Madeleine is to trigger a system of securing premises and systematically searching for a missing child in the critical hours immediately after they are reported missing.

Madeleine's parents Gerry and are supporting the scheme. "Kate and I fully endorse the Code Madeleine scheme," said Mr McCann.

"Kate and I hope that this new code will help protect British families when they are on holiday."

Andy Cooper, director general of the Federation of Tour Operators, said: "All of our major members have agreed to support Code Madeleine and adopt the six-point plan to help make children safer while on holiday."

MADELEINE McCANN : A STILL UNSOLVED MYSTERY

This past May the 4th, there was a very sad, heart-wrenching anniversary, that is the one of the 2nd year of Madeleine McCann's disappearance. To this day, she is still missing, and we still do not have the slightest clue as to what happened to her and as to whether she is still alive or not. For many months, "thanks" to all the desinformation and the "leaks" (provided, we know that now, by the PJ, and most particularly, by Gonçalo Amaral), I was one of the most ferocious critics of the McCanns. For months, I was absolutely convinced that they knew what had happened to their daughter and/or had something to do with it. But when the files from the PJ were finally released, I experienced a complete turn-about. I now stand utterly convinced that the McCanns know NOTHING WHATSOEVER about what happened to their daughter and her whereabouts. In short, they have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with their disappearance, except, of course, for the fact that indeed, they were incredibly naïve and grossly negligent. So, I decided to upload a series of videos made in 2007-2008 about this world-famous unsolved mystery. The viewers MUST keep in mind that these videos were made when very little facts were actually known about this baffling case, and when the only informations at hand were actually nothing more than unfounded, outrageous gossips, rumors, allegations and innuendos. One thing remains certain, though : the PJ, through their sheer inexperience and incompetence, irretrievably jeopardized this case from its very onset. In all fairness, the PJ were NOT prepared for a case of such magnitude. True, they lacked the manpower, expertise, technology, etc, to deal efficiently with such a puzzling disappearance. Granted, they were under tremendous pressure to solve this case. But nonetheless, they blew it big time by making every mistake in the book. As a retired criminologist, my take on this case is very simple. Any which way we look at it, Madeleine IS DEAD. What I mean is this : even IF she's still PHYSICALLY alive, one can only guess in what condition she is. I don't even want to imagine what became of her if adbucted by a pedophile ring, for instance. In the "very best" case scenario (illegal adoption agency, or someone childless having taken her in desperation), she would NOT be today the same Madeleine her parents once knew. Would she meet them on the street, she most probably wouldn't even recognize them. And IF she is still alive and found, "chances" are that the McCanns would face a complete stranger. So even alive, she would be, in effect, "dead" to her own parents, for the Madeleine they once knew would be gone forever...My heart goes out to Madeleine, this adorable little angel, and to her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann. :(

Kate & Gerry recently marked the second anniversary with a PR offensive incorporating renewed appeals for information into Madeleine's disappearance.

They will join families of other vanished youngsters at London's South Bank on Monday to mark International Missing Children's Day.

This Date Has Now Passed .. Please Remember Our Missing Children

International Missing Childrens Day is commemorated on May 25th. The day was born out of tragedy, following the tragic disappearance in 1979 of six-year-old Etan Patz, who went missing on his way to school. Nine countries: Australia, Brazil, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands, Romania, South Africa and United Kingdom, have joined together to honor missing children by raising awareness of the issue of missing children globally.
On the morning of Friday, May 25, 1979, six-year-old Etan put on his prized blue captain's hat and left his SoHo apartment by himself—for the very first time—to walk the two blocks to catch the school bus. He did not reach the bus stop.
When he did not return home from school at 3:30 that afternoon, his mother reported him missing. An intense search, using nearly 100 police officers and a team of bloodhounds, began that evening and would continue for weeks. Various circumstances surrounding this case, such as it being Etan's first time outside alone, made it into a greatly media-driven incident.

Suspect
In 1991, jailhouse informants claimed that Jose Antonio Ramos, a convicted child sexual abuser imprisoned in Pennsylvania, admitted to his murder. Ramos had been a friend of Etan's one-time babysitter. He promised that no body would be found, saying "It's too horrible. No one would ever represent me".[citation needed] In a special feature on missing children, the New York Post reported on October 23, 1999 that Ramos was the prime suspect in Etan's disappearance.
His parents, Stanley and Julie Patz, pursued a civil case against Ramos, who was found liable for Patz's wrongful death in May 2004. They were awarded a sum of $2 million, which they have never collected, as Ramos is serving a prison term for molesting boys in Pennsylvania. Though he has served his full sentence of 12 to 15 years, he has not been released on parole because he has yet to complete mandatory counseling. Without evidence, a body, or a crime scene, some New York investigators do not believe they will ever be able to convict Ramos for Patz's death.[citation needed]

Each year, on the anniversary of Etan's birthday and his disappearance, Stan Patz sends Ramos a copy of his son's MISSING poster. On the back he types the same message: "What did you do to my little boy?"

Since 1983, our nation has observed May 25th as National Missing Children’s Day. First proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan and observed by every administration since, May 25th is the anniversary of the day in 1979 when 6-year-old Etan Patz disappeared from a New York street corner on his way to school.

His story captivated the nation. His photo, taken by his father, a professional photographer, was circulated nationwide and appeared in media across the nation and around the world. Etan became the poster-child for a movement. The powerful image came to symbolize the anguish and trauma of thousands of searching families.

For nearly three decades, the search for Etan has continued. However, today, just as that day when President Reagan proclaimed the first National Missing Children’s Day, Etan is still missing.

The widespread attention brought to his case and those of others eventually led to a nationwide commitment to help locate and recover missing children. National Missing Children’s Day honors this commitment by reminding parents, guardians, and other trusted-adult role models to make child safety a priority.

John Walsh "America's Most Wanted"

The Adam Walsh Story
On July 27, 1981, 6-year-old Adam Walsh and his mother Revé went to a department store about a mile away from their home to shop for lamps. When they entered the store Adam saw several children playing video games on a television monitor and asked if he could stay to play. His mother let him stay and went to the lamp department, which was about 75 feet away. Because the lamp she wanted was not in stock she returned rather quickly, less than 10 minutes later, but couldn’t find Adam. After looking for Adam on her own for two hours, someone finally called the local police department. By the end of that week thousands of fliers with Adam’s photograph were distributed through the local area. Sixteen days after Adam disappeared from the store his body was found and identified.

A parent's worst nightmare:

The recent media attention on the cases of Danielle van Dam, Elizabeth Smart, Samantha Runnion, and most recently, Erica Pratt, who made a daring escape from her captors Tuesday, has heightened the public awareness of child abductions even though most experts agree there is no current epidemic. Some suggest that while the number of cases may not have changed, their nature has and this shift has drawn the extra attention. "They are quite brazen and that is a different kind of perpetrator than the kind that tries to get close to the family," said Nancy McBride, director of prevention education for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, referring to the man who snatched Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom, and Alejandro Avila, the man accused of kidnapping Samantha Runnion, 5, her yard, and killing her.
"They were in their own homes and that is as gut-wrenching as it gets." Danielle van Dam, 7, was also snatched from her bedroom, while Erica Pratt, also 7, was grabbed off a street corner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erica_Pratt Advocates for missing children would like to see all cases get the attention that these high-profile incidents have but say they understand the types of decisions that leave the vast majority of abduction cases relatively unnoticed. "News directors are first and foremost looking for news," Ernie Allen, president and CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, told Court TV. "So if you look at the recent cases that have gotten so much attention ... those children disappeared from their homes and their own beds. It is a scenario that absolutely terrifies every parent. Thus, it's news."
Gerry's Blog Day 313 Kate and I were so sad to learn that Mari Luz’s body had been found. This is the news that at any parent of a missing child dreads and a situation we desperately hope that we never have to face. We deeply sympathise with her family and pray they remain strong and in time are able to find peace.
